Visa Application

Except for citizens of Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of China, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan, Romania and all Commonwealth countries other than Great Britain, India, Canada, Nigeria, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, all foreigners entering the United Republic of Tanzania need to obtain visa.

Single Entry Visa (Ordinary Visa)

This Visa is issued for a single entry to a visitor for a period not exceeding three months for holidays, visiting, leisure, health treatment, studies or any other activity legally recognized by the Law.

Multiple Entry Visa

This Visa is issued to persons whose nature of their business or circumstances require them to make frequent visits to the United Republic of Tanzania. The maximum validity of this Visa is twelve months. However, the holder of the Multiple Visa cannot stay in the country for 12 consecutive months. They are required to leave the country at least after every three months.

Business Visa

Business visa will be issued once to foreigners to allow them to enter in the United Republic of Tanzania for the following purposes;

To conduct special assignments such as fixing/repairing machines or to run short term training, etc.

To conduct professional roles such as auditing accounts etc.

To conduct lawful business according to the laws of the country.

A letter from an established company will be required to introduce the applicant, nature of the trip and the business contact in Tanzania.

Students /Volunteers Visa

Students/Volunteers entry visa requirements are like other types of visas. However, a letter of invitation from the contact Institution in Tanzania should be attached to the application. For those whom their stay exceeds more than three months need to apply for Resident/Work Permits.

Applications for Resident Permits should be submitted to the Director of Immigration in Tanzania while the applicant is outside the country.

Referred Visa

This type of visa is required for nationals of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstani, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan Republic, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen and Stateless persons or persons with refugee status.

Decision to grant entry visa to Tanzania to Nationals of the above countries is made at the Immigration Headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. However, the application is forwarded by the Tanzania Embassy in Berlin. Applicants are required to fill in visa application form and attach one passport photo, photocopies of the first five pages of passport, invitation letters or introductory letters where applicable. The applicant is required to clearly state reason for entry to Tanzania, show his/her contacts in Tanzania.

When the decision is made in Dar es Salaam, the Embassy will inform the applicant. If his application has been accepted, the applicant is supposed to submit his/her original passport to the Embassy for issuance of visa.

Applicants whom their Nationality fall under this category are not advised to book flight tickets or make payments for any reservation in Tanzania before they get approval for their Visa. Applicants of Referral Visa are advised to apply at least two months before their date of travel.

Karibu Tanzania

1.The following documents must be submitted for each visa applicant. However the Embassy may require more documents.

Passport (not a copy) valid for at least 6 months from the date of entering the country.
One application form (Online Fillable form)
One most recent original passport photo (Biometric) size 3.5 x 4.5cm.
Scanned or copies of photos are not acceptable
Confirmed return flight
Letters of invitation or recommendation for business and study trips

For applications sent by registered mail should include a sufficiently stamped, self-addressed secure envelope (Luftpolstertasche) also by registered mail.

Due to demand, an optional express visa is available at an extra fee of 20€

(administrative costs) above the normal fee; normally processed within a full working day.

4.Vaccine recommendations:

Although certification for immunization against yellow fever is mandatory for East Africa and bordering areas, travellers to Tanzania do not need to have proof of immunization. However, immunization against this deadly disease is recommended for all visitors entering Tanzania after having travelled in countries where yellow fever is a health problem. Healthwise, it is always safe to have vaccinations especially when travelling abroad/overseas

Application for passports

All Tanzanians living in countries which the Embassy of Tanzania in Berlin is accredited to, may come to the Embassy for renewal of passports which their validity is due to expire or lost. For renewal of expired or lost passports the following documents are required.

A copy of passport to be renewed or changed. An applicant must prove that he owns a passport by presenting it at the Embassy.
Filled in application form which can be obtained at the Embassy.
Passport size photos with blue background
Other identification documents such as Birth certificate, National Identity Card, Voters registration Card and Shekha Identity Card for the case of Zanzibar.
Police loss report for the case of lost Passport
For children applying for a passport for the first time, a birth certificate is required together with copies of passports of the parents.
All applicants must visit the Embassy on working days to complete the application.
Proof of payment of an application fee of Euros 50 for renewal of passport and Euros 100 for replacement of a lost passport, payable only through the Bank. 

It is important to note that passports are issued by the Immigration Office Headquarters in Dar es salaam and that the process may take long time. Applicants are therefore advised to make application as early as possible before passports expire.

Emergency travelling document is normally issued to Tanzanians who have no passport to enable them travel to Tanzania under emergency circumstances. Such emergency includes need to travel while the passport is expired and the new one has not been issued, a passport is lost while the owner is travelling, and any other situations deemed emergency.

To obtain an emergency travelling document an applicant needs to submit the following documents:

The consular section of the embassy provides legalization service of various documents to be used in Tanzania or in countries of representation. For legalisation to be done, applicants are required to send documents to be legalised and include:

A letter stating the reason for legalization.
Copies of the documents to be legalized.

Police Clearance Certificate

For those who require Police Clearance Certificates regarding “Criminal Records”, you are kindly advised to note that this Embassy does not issue Police Clearance Certificates. You are therefore advised to proceed as follows:

Attach a letter requesting a “Certificate of Good Conduct” from the applicant or institution requesting the certificate. The letter should provide details of the place you last resided while in Tanzania showing name of district, name of town, street name (if available) and house number.
The letter and attachments must be sent by DHL, having paid all shipment and return charges or Send by any convenient means, indicating the email address at which the applicant will be notified of the successful issuing of the certificate and communicate on means by which it will be returned to him/her at his/her cost.
Attach a copy of your passport, a photocopy of the page containing personal particulars.
Attach two recent passport size pictures
Attach proof of 25 USD payment (plus overseas charges & Bank clearance charges). This a fee charged by NBC Tanzania, therefore you will be responsible for the overseas & other bank charges.

Please note: – Don’t forget to send your recent contact details. If you are required to have the police certificate authenticated you should send it with prepaid postage or bring it personally to the Embassy. The Embassy will in turn seek a formal verification from concerned authorities in Tanzania. It may take 2 to 3 working days or even a week, depending on the response from the authorities in Tanzania. You would also be charged a fee of $40. (See also “Authentication Section”).

To obtain a filliming permit all companies, institutions, groups or individuals need to:

Fill in an application form.
Submit letter(s) stating reasons for shooting/ filming in Tanzania.
Attach a synopsis or scripts when forwarding their applications.

There are two application forms; one for import and another one for export

A traveller who wishes to import a pet/dog to Tanzania has to apply to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Development.  An application must be done before arrival in Tanzania and a permit will be offered to bring the dog.  Before leaving Tanzania, you will again apply for dog exit from the country and a permit to exit will be issued.

For bringing a pet into Tanzania you will be required pay Tsh. 30,000 and for taking out the animal you will pay Tsh. 20,000 (Total Tsh. 50,000).

Note: Photocopies of the records of the animal when entering and a Tanzanian Veterinarian recommendation when leaving Tanzania are crucial regarding health of the animal.
